8 speed auto problems

My neighbour has a Tacoma with the 8 speed auto and he said that he's having problems with it and mentioned it's a common sight with these vehicles. This has me concerned becuase my Rav4 has the 8 speed auto, so how concerned should I be and can I find a way to fix the problem?

Initially he noticed that it was struggling to find the right gear to accelerate and then that turned into rough shifts and the latest symptom is skipping gears
